About Prowess

Hi, I am Godfrey Nji Esoh, founder of Prowess. After studying in Cameroon, I worked as a lecturer, higher education administrator, and clinical pathologist for 14 years before moving to the United States. During this time, I experienced first-hand the enormous challenges that educational institutions and students in Africa face:

1. People living in rural areas do not have access to higher education establishments since most of them are located in urban areas.
2. Apart from tuition fees, the cost of rent and living expenses in university towns is usually prohibitory.
3. There is a general shortage of qualified staff, especially in the domains of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
4. Most institutions have inadequate or substandard physical infrastructure, IT facilities, libraries, laboratories, and workshops.
5. Many institutions suffer frequent lockdowns or insecurity due to conflicts and strikes. 
6. The COVID-19 Pandemic has cast a new light on the hazzards associated with over crowded campuses and classrooms. 
7. Most institutions still use curricula that are out of sync with rapidly changes market needs, leading to a graduate unemployment/underemployment rate that is as high as 80% in some countries.

Driven by my passion to find a solution to these problems, I partnered with Coursera, over 240 international teaching partners, and 10 Cameroonian university institutes to found Prowess in the year 2020. Prowess was founded as a means of leveraging the digital revolution to improve higher education access and quality in Africa, particularly Cameroon.
