Millions of rural African youths do not have access to quality education as a result of armed conflict, poverty, gender discrimination, and lack of infrastructure. Because the other 16 Sustainable Development goals cannot be achieved without quality education, the education gap means that Africa will continue to lag behind. This is an unfortunate situation that has undesirable ripple effects on the whole world. 

In the absence of quality education that leads to rewarding careers and socio-economic independence, young men take up arms while young women are forced into prostitution and early marriages. Some sell family property to travel abroad and mostly end up with broken dreams. Thus, the cycle of poverty, disease, and conflict continues. COVID-19 has engendered an unprecedented adoption of digital learning across the world. Unfortunately, less than 10% of African institutions have the digital infrastructure to leverage this trend. 

PROWESS is an innovative academic partnership that blends digital technology with work-based learning to provide quality and affordable higher education and professional training to millions of Africans who would otherwise not have access to it. Our collaboration with Coursera gives us access to over 7000 world-class courses and certificates provided by some 241 teaching partners like Yale University, Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, Google, IBM, Amazon, and Microsoft. We deploy these courses and certificates through our Coursera-For-Campus platform to African students wherever they are. So long as they have a smart device with internet access, they have the world’s largest classroom with them.

Our local host institutions provide the curriculum that we use to curate learning pathways and content that strike a balance between international quality and local relevance. Furthermore, they supervise skills acquisition, conduct final examinations, award credits, and issue final local qualifications.

Your donation will help us pay off the annual Coursera licensing fees and set up Digital Learning Hubs in selected communities to reinforce shared access to computers and reliable internet.
